Washington AP reports a service wide morale problem in the U S Air Force amid cases of pilots captured and tortured by Communists in Korea. Officials weigh policy changes to limit information given to captives and to clarify rules for future POWs while awaiting full facts.
Detroit AP reports Ford Motor Co will lay off 3100 hourly workers as it shifts engine making from River Rouge to Dearborn. Ford expects about 450 of the laid off will transfer to other operations later.
Former President Harry S. Truman warned that freedoms are under attack by unprincipled politicians at an Israeli bond sale rally in Chicago Stadium before about 22 000. He urged resistance to fear and coercion and said he would not speak further on the McCarthy White case.
A Ways and Means Committee member urged states to abolish income taxes and cede revenue to the federal government. He also proposed shifting liquor and tobacco taxes to Washington while giving states estate and gift taxes and certain levies. He called for ending federal road aid and simplifying tax payments to reduce burdens.
Six year old Scott Bapty suffered second and third degree burns on his chest when his clothing caught fire while playing with matches. He was treated at St. Luke's hospital and reported in real good condition. A babysitter, Carmelita Moore, 16, extinguished the flames and summoned aid as the sister played outside.

A 16 year old Cedar Rapids youth was wounded Saturday afternoon in a hunting mishap at Amana when a caliber automatic rifle discharged. He survived the incident as his brother Archie, 22, drove him to Cedar Rapids after the accident.

The U S Catholic hierarchy will start an eight million dollar campaign on December 6 to finish the upper church of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. Archbishop John F Noll of Fort Wayne will direct the drive which aims to complete granite and limestone exterior and marble interior, with 3000 seating, marking the centenary of the Immaculate Conception proclamation.
In a United Nations presentation Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge unveiled an eyewitness atrocity dossier alleging mass executions torture and forced marches by Chinese and North Korean forces against 29 815 U N soldiers and civilians. The report includes a Kyes letter and statements from 13 repatriated soldiers and notes behind line abuses.
