The Cedar Rapids Kennel Association launches its fourth annual drive to aid the Linn County Humane Society. Donations are in area grocery store boxes through December 28, with last year’s gifts feeding shelter animals through September per spokeswoman Joyce Warner.
Two motorists were arrested and charged with drunken driving early Wednesday in Linn County. Lisa Steger, 25, of 705 Brandon Ave in Hiawatha, was taken into custody at 1:21 a.m. at C Avenue and Eighth Street NW. Everett Short, 57, of Robins, was arrested at 2:30 a.m. at Boyson Road and Terry Avenue in Hiawatha.
The Cedar Rapids City Council approved rezoning of two northwest side lots at 12th Avenue and Edgewood Road NW from residential to office service for a 25 bed elderly care center. Two more readings required before effect. Neighbors opposed drainage concerns and petitions. Conditions added to curb runoff.
Linn County Board of Supervisors approves 3500 dollar phase II study by Iowa Electric Light and Power Co to assess incineration of landfill refuse for steam and electricity. IE will weigh current and incoming garbage, decide feasibility and whether to include other landfills, and seek a grant up to 40 percent of costs.
Linn County prosecutors vow to appeal the Court of Appeals ruling overturning Bruce Hatter’s May 1984 kidnapping and sexual abuse conviction. If the Iowa Supreme Court upholds, Hatter faces a third trial while remaining jailed, with victims considered for testimony again.
