Charlie the 55-year-old retiree turns laundromat owner in Hiawatha

At 55 and with 33 years on the railroad Charlie Thillan of Cedar Rapids reinvented himself after Rock Island Railroad closed three years earlier. He opened a laundromat in a former Hiawatha service station in September 1980, adding a car wash, gas sales, and a bait shop. Now sole owner since January, he serves neighbors daily, values customer ties, and hopes to fish more once time allows.
