Machinist's Mate 3/c Dale L. Meyer of Norfolk leaves Norfolk on the destroyer John Hood with destroyer squadron 22 for duty in the Mediterranean. The unit will visit ports in the Mediterranean and northern Europe and spend holidays on the Riviera in southern France during NATO exercises with the Sixth Fleet.
First Lt Richard Burgert begins observer training at Ellington AFB Texas after supply work since June 1954. He and wife Debbie will live in Pasadena with parents visiting in Texas. Lt Arthur Van Cleve, based at Fort Sam Houston, heads to Fort Polk. Sgt Robert Gillen graduates from ABC warfare course at Camp Pendleton. John Culver attends Quantico officer candidate school. Cedar Rapids men participate in Sage Brush maneuvers at Fort Polk with 110000 troops testing atomic and chemical warfare concepts. names include M/Sgt Carl Nelson Pvt Roger Morrison Pvt Jack Carlson Cpl James Simons Pfc David Shakespeare Pfc Frank Waldron Jr and Airman Ronald Prior with various assignments.

Seaman Apprentice Danny Visek, son of Milo and Mrs Visek of 1501 K Street SW, exits Cedar Rapids for 14 days from the San Diego naval training center where he trains as a storekeeper. Specialist Dilman Beck, son of Dilman E Beck and Mrs Beck of 1398 Elmhurst Drive NE, heads to Fort Riley Kansas for 40 days and will report January 16. Beck, a 1951 Franklin high school graduate, served two years in Korea and is a telephone and teletype operator in the signal corps after studying at Cornell College.
Two Cedar Rapids men enter basic training at Camp Chaffee Arkansas. Pvt. Joseph J. Hartman son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Hartman 229 Eighteenth Street NW and Pvt. William A Rowland Jr husband of Ruth A Rowland 126 Sixth Street NE report for duty.
The defense department shifts focus from vertical takeoffs to aircraft that can operate from short runways. Lt. Col. John L. Klingenhagen noted greater payload capacity with short takeoffs and addressed about 200 aircraft makers and designers.
Klingenhagen notes a shift in defense department focus toward studying STOL aircraft and away from VTO. He defines STOL as any plane that can take off in under 200 feet, including convertiplanes.
The Optimist club will open its Christmas tree lot Saturday at the City market by the Cedar River bank at E Avenue. About 5 090 trees arrive by Wednesday and will be sorted for a 9 a.m. opening next Saturday. The lot runs 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until Christmas or until trees run out. Deposits of 1 are encouraged. cards assure a tree when purchased and come from Optimist members or youth groups sharing in the project. Proceeds fund the club’s youth work.
A Colorado survey ranks 30 peaks higher than Pike's Peak with the flatter 31st on the list. It notes Colorado dominates the top elevations, redefining regional peak standings and noting comparative elevations.

In Indianapolis a retired army sergeant, Ver non Moran, asked for a longer jail term after being sentenced to 16 months for forgery. Judge Scott McDonald denied the request and ordered Moran to serve the shorter sentence, noting he must be a good soldier. Moran said it would be nice to have about two years in jail as his pension pays his debts.
