The 6000 CIO longshoremen in San Francisco voted to accept the new contract signaling early resumption of port work. Nationwide balloting across West and East Coast ports aimed to end costly stoppages that have tied up more than 500 ships and halted trade.
The Nationalist government in Nanking on Saturday urged immediate U S help to prevent collapse of its forces facing Communists led by Chen Yi. The appeal to Congress says loss of China endangers American security and world peace as fighting intensifies near Suchow and the lower Yangtze.

In Columbus, 24 pickets and 2 union organizers were arrested after a brief skirmish before the American Zinc Oxide plant. An auto was overturned during the clash amid a four month strike sparked by refusal of the company to bargain under Taft Hartley laws. Sheriff Ralph J. Paul sent 25 deputies to contain the outbreak within 30 minutes.
The Railway Express Agency tieup in the New York metropolitan area ended Friday after a partial settlement. Talks toward a full agreement would continue. The AFL Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks called the six day slowdown of 6,000 members and the company lifted the embargo on express shipments in and out of the metro area.
After a crowded Christmas parade, Santa promised to make up shortfalls next year as demand exceeded supply. Extra candy bars arrived too late, but crowds enjoyed good weather, safe crowd control, and strong shopping from out of town visitors. Local merchants saw high business volumes.
In Chicago a man named Joseph Grzeda, 27, died after stepping on another man’s toes in a near South Side restaurant. Charles Tanthorey, 26, and Raymond Fassett, 40, were held without charge after following Grzeda and his companion to an alley, where Tanthorey drew a .32 caliber pistol and fired. Witnesses said Grzeda apologized. Tanthorey and Fassett, who were drinking, arrested nearby.
Cedar Rapids news reports county attorney William Crissman fires a letter to Constable Frank Merritt after Merritt seized guns from three hunters on land near Springville. Crissman says no legal right exists to take guns, outlines proper procedures, and cautions against abuse of office. Guns were returned to Ray Axline, Francis Axline, and Mark Schaible.
Aaron D. Richards, 27, sat calmly in his stalled car on a railroad crossing as six trains were held up. Police say he ignored the whistles and fumes, and he was booked on a charge of public drunkenness.
Navy and Army play to a 21 21 tie in Philadelphia. Navy rallied twice but Army kept its perfect season alive with the stalemate.
President Truman told key legislators he expects prompt action when Congress reconvenes. An administration source says he will press the blueprint he offered voters. The Senate Democratic policy committee will meet after Christmas to draft a rapid program and organize Congress swiftly.
Corpus Christi AP reports a search of Gulf waters after a submarine sighting 20 miles southeast of the naval air station at 4 p.m. Friday. The station says no U.S. submarines are known in the area and personnel reported seeing what appeared to be a periscope and submarine wake.
Belgrade AP Tito announces Cominform trade restrictions force Yugoslavia to revamp its five year plan. He says industrial regrouping aims at faster socialist state, with new factories oil drills and coke ovens, plus building worker housing to prevent job changes.
Reports say a Pakistan Airways Dakota crashes 400 miles northeast of Karachi with 16 passengers and five crew members aboard. Among the dead is one American, Capt. Geyser, a Missouri native living in Los Angeles. Geyser was loaned from American Transocean Airline under a personnel agreement.
An American official in Marburg reports that black marketeers have seized millions in property and cash, moving wealth into the Soviet zone. The ring links German officials, uses Soviet uniforms, and crosses borders, with 30 Germans jailed for trafficking stolen American Army trucks worth over a million marks.
At a budget hearing the Iowa Board of Education told Gov Blue and Gov-elect Beardsley the state must either fund expansion to handle rising enrollments or cut enrollment to existing capacity. Board chair Rupe noted need for more buildings and teachers as tuition plans and private efforts were discussed.
The 58 nation U N assembly condemned Albania Yugoslavia and Bulgaria for aiding Greek communists with a 47 to 6 vote while the Soviet bloc protested. An additional weekly power saving day may total shutdown Sundays. Measures run until April under coal shortage pressure. Col. Lucille Cefalu 20 placed a San Francisco Examiner classified ad inviting friends to a church wedding at Our Lady of Victory in San Francisco.
