Mike Healy a longtime U.S. deputy marshal dies aged 80

Mike Healy 80 of 1300 Third Avenue SE longtime United States deputy marshal and Cedar Rapids city marshal died after a short illness. Healy was known for facing gunfire to catch criminals yet showing clemency to prisoners. Healy served in the northern district of Iowa on the Tama reservation and never used handcuffs or weapons with prisoners. Mike Healy a famed Cedar Rapids peace officer died early Tuesday ending a half century career as patrolman city marshal and U S deputy marshal He was 80 years old and held the last post for decades marking a long service and age record in the city.

Brothers Crash Near Central City After Road Incident

Arlie Jons aged 18 and Fred Jons aged 23, sons of Henry Jons, each drove separate cars from their Cedar County home six miles east of Coggon. Fred hurried home to tell his father after the first crash. A second collision near Central City at an intersection involving Gerald Merritt of Waubeeck caused no injuries. Sheriff James H. Smith reported both crashes.

The Cedar Rapids Community Chest exceeded its goal with 80 330 39 in pledges at noon, surpassing the 80 260 49 target. Chicago Great Western announces $1.2 million track program

Patrick H Joyce, president of the Chicago Great Western, said the railroad will invest about $1.2 million in track work and provide six months of employment for 225 men. Orders for 7100 tons of steel rails, totaling 42 miles, were split between Illinois Steel and Inland Steel.
