Herbal firms push unproven menopause remedies in marketing blitz
In Chicago, makers of soy, black cohosh, and red clover products push ads to doctors and at meetings to cash in on hormone therapy fears. A review in Annals of Internal Medicine finds limited support for these herbs, with black cohosh and soy showing small benefits, but many studies were small and inconclusive. Promensil sponsors offered doctors $1000 to attend sessions after a menopause society meeting, drawing criticism from experts who warn of potential harm to women. Novogen says the session money covered a day’s stay, not promotional influence, amid ongoing debates post Menopause Health Initiative findings.
