Dense fog paralyzed transport from land to sea and air as the Harmony rescue effort highlighted the crisis. Airports closed and hundreds of traffic accidents blamed on the murk left two deaths and three infant deaths under investigation for possible smog links.
Allan B. Kline, American Farm Bureau president, calls Benson’s directive restricting private farm group ties with federal judges and agents good policy. He notes strong impact in Illinois and Iowa but expects the policy to limit harm, with counties fearing shifts to agent funding and office expenses.
A wind whipped fire at the giant Fifth Quartermasters base depot in Pusan Korea forces thousands of Koreans to flee. Two hundred U S soldiers and Korean firefighters battled the blaze as flames spread through flimsy dwellings and most of the base. Origin of the fire was not determined.
Police report a theft of 92000 in gems from the home of Anthony DeSiderio, a wealthy manufacturer in West Orange New Jersey. The loot was taken from a wall safe in a bedroom closet and the crime occurred Friday night, with a 13 state alarm alert issued on Thursday.
Iowa State College officials said they have not yet studied Secretary Benson's memorandum about ending tie ups between agriculture department workers and private farm groups. The statement notes Farm Bureaus have led extension education for over 35 years and supported research and education, with county Farm Bureaus currently the only farm aid groups to qualify for county extension funds.
The Rev. Henry Sloane Coffin, 77, prominent churchman and former president of Union Theological Seminary in New York, died Thursday in Lakeville Connecticut. Coffin also served as moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.
The FBI charged Norman H. McCabe with the Remington murder at Lewisburg federal penitentiary identifying a motive tied to a planned burglary. Suspects include Lewis Cagle Jr., George McCoy and Robert Parker, who allegedly beat Remington with a brick wrapped in a stocking after planning to ransack his room.
Senator Carlson asserts the McCarthy censure centers on conduct of individual senators, not a communism versus anti communism issue. He notes the Senate committee penalized McCarthy for statements about colleagues and executive branch officials, warning such logic could erode constitutional legislative processes.
In New Martinsville West Virginia two brothers Wayne Morgan age 18 and Glenn Morgan 13 hunting on a slope near their home fired at a squirrel. Wayne was fatally wounded in the neck and Glenn sustained a wound as the squirrel fled toward a tree. Sheriff Lee Francis reports the incident occurred on Thanksgiving Day during the hunt.
An army court martial disclosed that Russians refused political asylum to Sgt. James R. Bisonnette a 38 year old from Grand Rapids after he deserted. He asked to stay in the East but was sent back to the West. He was convicted of desertion and sentenced to three years hard labor and a dishonorable discharge.
Senator McCarthy plans to attend the Senate reconvening on the censure issue, saying he will be there Monday. His attorney Edward Williams says McCarthy may be released from Bethesda Naval Medical Center by Sunday. A hospital spokesman reports he continues to show satisfactory response to treatment and was briefly out of the hospital Thursday with the physician’s permission.
Hundreds of snapping turtles were released after a trailer carrying more than two tons caught fire on a U S highway. Firefighters recaptured the herd after a four hour effort. about a third of the load perished. David Young 25 a sailor from Hutchinson said he and a companion had gathered the turtles for the Chicago market and blamed a tossed cigarette for the blaze.
Secretary of State Dulles will deliver a major foreign policy speech on radio and television from Chicago at 9 30 p m CST Monday night. The State Department described the talk as global in nature and NBC will broadcast and televise it with plans to rebroadcast at 7 30 p m.
In Oslo the Norwegian parliament on Thursday night approved German rearmament and Norway's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Youngsters of all ages packed Memorial Coliseum in Cedar Rapids for a new style indoor Santa welcome. More than 6,500 attended the first three shows as 9:45 11:15 and 1:30 performances drew large crowds. Officials from the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Retail Merchants Bureau noted early arrivals and steady lines throughout the day. Continuous entrances and lobby crowds formed as the event proceeded.
Six people were killed instantly and burned beyond recognition when their parked car was rammed from the rear in a dust storm on U S Highway 30 near Burley Idaho. Seven in the striking car were injured. State Patrolman Marvin Snyder identified the dead as Donnie Parrott 22 and wife Joyce 20 Myron C Hill 49 and wife Lila 47 Grant Hill 32 and wife Marjorie 32 all of Buhl Idaho. The Myron Hills were the parents of Mrs Parrott. The car stopped behind a truck which moved aside to help another stalled motorist. The death car exploded when sandwiched between the struck and the other auto.
Harold M. Templeman long time Franklin high school civics history and golf coach will join the State Department, leaving Cedar Rapids Saturday for Washington to begin a year long leave of absence. He plans to travel widely in the U S and possibly Europe yearly while stationed, and will decide on permanent status after a trial period.
Former President Herbert Hoover lauded West Berlin and West Germany as frontline in the cold war during a five day tour. He told the West Berlin Senate that Berliners defend freedom while facing Communist pressure across the border. Hoover urged moral and spiritual resistance to Communist propaganda and warned of three Soviet threats: moral basis, arming, and infiltration.
AP dispatches from Formosa report conflicting claims over a Red assault on the Nationalist outpost at Wuchiu in the Formosa Strait. Initial notices spoke of a landing and many captures, but later communiques denied a landing and described a multi directional approach repulsed by Nationalist forces and air support.
The United States urged Britain to request the immediate release of 13 Americans jailed in Red China on spying charges. Peiping had claimed the group was sentenced after admitting special training in espionage and guerrilla warfare.
The Iowa Development Commission asked the 1955 legislature for 126000 a year for operating expenses in the next biennium, a 50 percent rise from 80000. Printing and advertising would jump from 32000 to 58000, salaries from 32000 to 42000 with two new staff, and industrial promotion priorities aim to attract more industry to Iowa. Gov elect Leo Hoegh endorsed expanding industrial expansion to raise tax base, jobs, and business activity.
FBI disclosed that more than half a ton of food was stolen from the U S S Atka, an ex Russian icebreaker bound for an Antarctic expedition. Two suspects, Sailor Michael Batbouta and Zigmund Micek of Pawtucket Rhode Island, were held after a tip led to their capture while observed exchanging packages at a navy parking lot. a third suspect was being hunted.
Richard Larkin and his girlfriend Marie Brenner both 20 phoned the sheriff's office to report they could not see to drive due to dense fog near Montebello. Deputies said nothing could be done as visibility remained zero.
