Cedar Rapids school board may trim 2003 04 tax rate
Cedar Rapids may lower the 2003 04 tax rate by about 20 cents to 15 20 per 1000, a 1 percent cut, as the district seeks a $170 million budget. The plan follows a 19 percent rise this year and reflects reduced early retirement costs, with 2 percent raises assumed and possible budget cuts if raises exceed that. The meeting includes a student expulsion hearing and is held at the Educational Service Center.

Deer reflectors fail to cut deer vehicle crashes
The December 2000 Iowa DOT draft report on deer vehicle crashes notes no conclusive evidence that reflectors reduce incidents. A two year DOT and DNR study found crashes decreased slightly inside test areas but rose outside. fencing and underpasses are costly and deer herd reduction is unpopular. The report calls no cost effective solution clear yet and says further study continues.
