Iowa City Regina defeats Cedar Rapids Prairie 72 to 50 to extend its consecutive victories to 28. Gannon pours in 27 points and Hastings leads Prairie with 14 as Regina opens strong with a 24-7 run after a 6-0 start.
Jane Hanneman leads Vinton with 29 points as they top Marion 60 to 50. Jennifer Boddicker adds 18 for Vinton, who built a 40 22 halftime lead despite Marion’s late push led by Janene McElree with 22 and Roxanne Jackson with 14.
Aldo Guidolin the Colorado Rockies director of player personnel and former NHL defenseman was named to succeed Pat Kelly as coach. Kelly was fired after a 7-2 loss to Vancouver that left Colorado with 3 wins and 14 losses, the franchise's worst record. Guidolin, 46, was expected to join the team in Buffalo. GM Ray Miron confirmed the choice though officials declined comment.
Michigan State hosts Iowa at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing Saturday at noon Iowa time. Radio stations KGRN KOTH KSTT WHO KHAK WMT KXIC cover the game before an expected crowd of 65 000. Michigan State leads the series 9 5 1.
Wisconsin combine strong rebounding and Wes Matthews hot shooting to defeat Wisconsin Milwaukee 74 to 55 at the UW Fieldhouse. Matthews scores 16 of his 26 in the second half as the Badgers coast past 7 606 fans.
Jefferson J-Hawks rout Linn-Mar 63 to 46 led by Brad Peters with 24 points and Ross Wiebold with 18. The young lineup built a 31 21 halftime lead, forced turnovers in the fourth, and clinched the road victory. Linn-Mar high scorers were Kurt Krumrer and Don Blok with nine each.
Jeff High scored 29 points leading Jefferson past Linn-Mar 65 to 47 on Friday night at Linn-Mar. John Forrest added 18 points for Jefferson.
In a tight opener Kennedy and Davenport West traded leads through three quarters before Tim Kadlee and Jeff Palmer sparked Kennedy late. Kadlee scored 18 with 13 rebounds and Palmer added 17 as Kennedy secured a 54 53 win.
Prairie High School overwhelms Iowa City West 45-14 in the opening dual. Scott Penrod opened with a 39 second pin at 98 pounds and Barry Davis pinned at 119 as Prairie won eight of the next nine matches. The Hawks JV won 35-32 while West sophomores won 33-29. Prairie competes in the Newton Invitational and hosts LaSalle on December 1.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy defeated Davenport West 78 to 60 on Friday night in a sophomore basketball action.
Iowa faces Michigan State in East Lansing with a noon kickoff and hopes to stop a high scoring Spartans. Thirteen Iowa seniors travel, including Dave Becker and Tim Gutshall, as coach Bob Cummings likely nears dismissal after the season ending game.
