Postal sorting cut in Cedar Rapids eyed to save 3.6 million
A Postal Service feasibility study proposes eliminating 34 of Cedar Rapids 214 processing jobs and relocating the rest to Milan, lowering costs by 3.6 million annually but threatening local printers and commercial mailers who would face higher rates and longer transport. Dan Skemp, president of the local postal workers union, says the change would harm service and raise costs for Cedar Rapids firms. The plan shifts 180 jobs to Milan and could reduce Cedar Rapids mail handling to a minimal local drop.
