Long-delayed Lakeside Casino construction begins in Osceola
After months of delays, construction crews start on a 47 million floating casino complex in Osceola. William Grace of Southern Iowa Gaming Co. says formal notice was issued to begin, with heavy equipment on site and a breaking ceremony set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at West Lake. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission granted a license in November 1997.

Iowa casino complex to open in 1999 south of Des Moines
Mayor Fred Diehl backs the project as construction begins for a casino complex 35 miles south of Des Moines. The development will create about 720 jobs in a town of 4,200 and open in December 1999 with a 1500 passenger gambling boat a 500 seat convention center a 60 room hotel and eateries. A new interchange will provide direct casino access and weather permitting work may continue through winter to finish the hotel by spring.

Cattle rancher from Spirit Lake pleads guilty to fraud
Daniel Tritle, 33, former Dickinson County Cattlemen president, pled guilty in federal court to seven counts of fraud and money laundering. He faces up to 30 years and $1 million fines per bank fraud count, with sentencing set for Jan. 27. The case involves cattle he fed for others and alleged misappropriation and resales.

Davenport man leaves $632000 estate to heirs sought
Andrew Jansen died in June 1997 at age 80 with no will or known relatives. Norwest Bank as administrator hired a Seattle firm to locate heirs for his Davenport estate valued at $632,010. If no heirs are found, the money goes to the Iowa general fund and then to the Scott County court for final disposition.
