Cordelia Dow Whetstone, wife of Robert Whetstone, died Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at home from a heart attack. Survivors include her husband. Funeral services are planned for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Osthout Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in Oak.
Linn county supervisors and Cedar Rapids city council approve joint appointment of a sanitary engineer to handle mutual health and sanitation problems. They plan to seek applicants, with a likely salary of at least 5000 dollars, and will act jointly for appointment and funding.
Mystic officials dismissed George Shiltz from the night marshal post citing a grand jury stance against his continuation as peace officer. Ward Tylee died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home at 5 45 a m Sunday after a long illness. Born December 10 1874 in Fulton he lived in Toddville 62 years. He married Frances Parsons February 24 1896 at Toddville. Cedar Rapids fire losses for September totaled 5439.32 with buildings damaged 2491.54 and contents 2947.78. Chief E P Kohout told the city council that all but 166.50 of the total was insured. Building values and contents totals are listed as 388,438.38 for a separate figure.
In Bloomfield AP report, Walter M. Mayer, 56, a Santa Fe rancher, fails to secure a directed verdict of innocence as Judge Harold V. Levis rules the jury should decide the case. Mayer faces first degree murder charges with a death penalty possible for the May killing of John C. Wisdom, 51, amid a sheep deal dispute. The defense loses attempts to strike the first degree charge and its alternatives, and testimony ends with the defense calling Bert Leyda, who corroborates travel timing while the state argues Wisdom was in Bloomfield or Chicago earlier. The jury likely to be seated soon.
Stephen Werson, New York, plans an appeal after his dismissal as editor of Earlham Post for an unsigned article in the November 18 issue. The advisory board, five students and one faculty member, ruled he violated journalistic principles by letting a non staff writer present a partisan view as news in a piece advocating freer interracial dating.
In Portland Maine a Marine recruiting office exchanged a haversack fork for trainee John R Beeler 17 and kept his enlistment on hold until the fork was recovered from the Marine supply depot. The National Guard initially refused to release Beeler who had been with the guard before choosing the Marines. The guard demanded the fork be returned despite the Marines offering to reimburse its 12 cent cost.
In Oak Park near Whittier Elementary, uniformed firemen patrol a street corner to serve as crossing guards after the village could not authorize a dedicated crossing officer. Fire Chief Waters arranged for Engine Co. No. 2 to provide a fireman daily during morning, noon, and afternoon school times.
Hartford state workers balk at a caterer sent to desks after abolishing a basement cafeteria coffee break. They complain coffee arrived before work or after lunch and claim no time was saved.
Courthouse records show 39 year old Burnell A. Toerber of Marion pled innocent before Judge Charles Penningroth after a Sunday crash on county road 150 north of Cedar Rapids. Highway Patrolman Harold DeGear said beer was found in the car and Toerber appeared intoxicated. Bond set at 500 dollars pending posting later Monday.
Jury members were being selected Monday for a $55,000 personal damage suit brought by Lawrence L. Williams against Iowa Manufacturing Company and Boyd C. Jacobs. The Cedar Rapids auto-truck crash on March 17 allegedly caused Williams physical and mental injuries. The trial, in Judge Floyd Philbrick's court, involves Fisher and Huston for Williams, Barnes Wadsworth Elderkin Locher for Iowa, and Simmons Perrine Albright Ellwood Neff for Jacobs.
Donald E. Condit, 25, of 2508 Franklin Ave NE, was fined 300 dollars and given a suspended six month sentence to the county jail after pleading guilty to larceny for stealing two auto tires valued at 25.60 each from Montgomery Ward. Bergman confronted Condit and he admitted the theft, producing the tires from his car trunk. Detectives Shannon and Walker arrested him. Judge Penningroth suspended jail time on good behavior and payment of fine and costs because the defendant is married and father of two minor children.
The sheriff received a report Monday of a theft involving 50 gallons of gasoline taken from trucks in Linn County. Farmer Charles Mershak of Central City said the fuel was stolen from trucks at the rock quarry by the Wapsie river northwest of Central City.
John L. Crowe 98 a former Milwaukee railroad conductor died Friday evening at a Toledo convalescent home. He is survived by a niece Catherine Faye of Waterloo. Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Overton funeral home. Burial will be in St Joseph's cemetery. The Rosary will be this evening.
Cheyenne Wyoming officials say neighboring states do not mobilize honorary forces. Governor C J Rogers holds an admiral's commission in the Nebraska navy and serves as a colonel on the governors' staffs of Oklahoma and New Mexico.
City briefs report a Planned Parenthood clinic meeting at St. Luke's hospital Tuesday at 7 30 p.m. along with a Thanksgiving candlelight dinner and dining room hours. Parade committee and Kiwanis club events are noted, plus local traffic fines and a Stamps Arrive notice.
At the Cedar Rapids chapter of the National Association of Cost Accountants a meeting is planned at the Montrose hotel at 7 p.m. Monday to discuss fixed as sets and reporting. Alfred Lynch, 76, was bruised in a two car collision at First avenue and Twelfth street East. Edward Simmons of Marengo and Doris Schmid were the drivers. Schmid was treated at St. Luke's hospital. J B Heidel, formerly of Cedar Rapids, was named general agent in Albany by National Life Insurance Company of Vermont, effective December 1. He had served as supervisor of agencies at the home office and joined the Cedar Rapids general agency as a field underwriter in 1935 after graduating from the University of Iowa.
Sioux City Parks Drew Fletcher, a three term councilman, resigned after being indicted Nov. 12 on conspiracy charges over contract awards for equipment. The county attorney may seek ouster if all three indicted councilmen do not resign. others have not commented on resigning.
Davenport authorities identified the nine year old found Sunday along the Mississippi River with a box of toys as Edward Culver son of Raymond Culver and Mrs Culver of Creston. He is one of three Culver children placed in Davenport orphanage last week due to home conditions described as child neglect. The boy initially told police his name was Edward Scofield but that is the mother's maiden name used since her separation earlier this year.
Cedar Rapids city filed a civil account suit in Superior Court seeking 39.76 for moving a water stop box at 3001 Old Marion Road NE in October 1952. Assistant City Attorney Maurice Nathanson says the case may move to district court if a newly approved municipal court takes over before settlement.
