In Rio de Janeiro a 25-year-old woman, Candia de Souza Barbosa, may become the first rabies survivor after surgeons at Francisco de Castro hospital inserted two tubes and pumped in hyperimmune gamma globulin through brain access. The operation on November 9 followed days of nervousness and paralysis. Doctors say she shows signs of recovery and likely avoidance of the disease, which is usually fatal within days. Rabies in Brazil causes hundreds of deaths yearly, with Rio reporting up to about 60 fatalities this year.
