Audubon’s Birds of America Folio Prints in England
Audubon traveled to England to find a printer for his Birds of America folio. The double elephant folios were oversized for their time. Subscriptions funded the project, with prints delivered five at a time. Robert Havell Jr. engraved copper plates from Audubon watercolors, then assistants hand colored them. About 200 sets were made, many later sold as individual pages.
