In Pittsfield Illinois Rev Col Ellsworth Newton a Baptist preacher testified he did not kill Mrs Maybelle Kelly claiming he was kidnapped by at least two people including his foster daughter Myra Hanan near Hannibal Missouri. He said the abductors drove away as Mrs Kelly cried for help and that Myra later told him Kelly was dead. He repudiated an 11 page confession read by prosecutors.
