The Dow rose 15.10 to 2,565.35 as oil prices and open-market rates edged up. Advancers beat decliners 902 to 624 on the NYSE with Banks of Iowa and Procter and Gamble among top gainers, while MCI led declines. Trading volume was 140.95 million shares.
Tsugio Kusajima of the Japan External Trade Organization spoke at the University of Iowa on a seminar about opportunities and best practices for Americans entering the Japanese market. He cited long-term planning, local recruitment, unique product offerings, and strong partnerships as keys to success amid examples from Met-Coil, Speed-Fan, Boeing, Kodak, McDonald’s, KFC, IBM, and Coca-Cola. He noted Japan as a major U.S. export market for agricultural products and cited several Iowa-based Japanese investments and plants. He emphasized a skilled workforce, solid transport, central location, and reasonable costs as Iowa advantages.
