Angry Arab students attacked the Egyptian embassy in Athens and a blast hit the Beirut embassy killing one diplomat and wounding at least 19. In Beirut a mortar or blast on the first floor wounded soldiers as witnesses disputed the cause. Saudis criticized Sadat's trip to Jerusalem, calling it a delicate matter amid regional tensions. Nearby police battled protesters and 60 demonstrators, mostly Iraqis and Jordanians, were detained as the crisis widened.
Dr Selby Ballantyne 60 superintendent of Kirkwood Community College died of a possible heart attack in Colorado Springs where he was attending a conference for college presidents. He led Area 10, later Kirkwood, from 1966 and was its only superintendent. Ballantyne was born in 1917 in Albia and held degrees from Iowa State and Drake University, with a long career in Iowa education.
Senator John Culver urges President Carter to stop selective disclosures of censored SALT negotiation details and to present as much as possible of the emerging agreement to the public. He notes a New York Times front page on a Soviet concession and says he has telephoned the White House.
