Iowa City schools push equity plan to boost staff of color
The Iowa City Community School District aims to raise the share of employees who are people of color from about 7 percent in 2013-14 to 15 percent by 2019-20 and keep it there. Kingsley Botchway, hired as equity and staffing director, cites mentoring and community engagement as key to retention and diversity. The district awaits a potential state teacher leadership grant in January to support mentoring efforts.
