Study on comparable worth of Iowa state jobs urged
An Iowa interim committee urged funding a study by the Iowa Merit Employment Department to assess whether state jobs filled by women are paid less than those filled mainly by men. The panel heard that women in management often earn in lower pay grades than men, with calls for a $50,000 study to evaluate job values by knowledge, skill, and responsibility.

Fisher Controls Announces 80 More Layoffs at Marshalltown
Fisher Controls said 80 more white collar workers at its Marshalltown headquarters will be laid off effective December 17, raising salaried layoffs at the site to about 200 since the year began. The plant also has 411 hourly workers on layoff and a total staff nearing 3,000. Vice President James Teegarden attributed the cutbacks to weak demand and a shrinking order backlog.
