Parnell Couple Observes Their 50th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Michael J. Callan marked fifty years of marriage with a family dinner in Parnell. They wed at St. Michael's Catholic Church and ran a general store in town. Six children were born, one son Marlin died in infancy. six surviving children attended, including M. J. Callan, T. J. Callan, Mrs. George S. Hardy of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Paul Kohl of Des Moines, along with other relatives and friends.

County WPA Road Jobs Approved in Linn County

Linn county board of supervisors approved five road surfacing and resurfacing projects set for December 3 at 10 a.m. The work will involve WPA labor and trucks and cover 4.75 miles on Beverly road and 11 miles on the Cedar Rapids to Palo road plus several other segments. Estimated contract costs total about $14,000. Also approved are roadside brush cutting along 175 miles of county trunk roads and similar work on local roads.

Supervisors Approve Bridge and Calvert Jobs

The Linn county board approves a creosoted wood pile bridge near Central City with two 20 by 20 foot spans at an estimated cost of 1107.71. It also authorizes a 90 by 40 foot plate culvert with masonry headwalls on the Rob ert Ellis river road west of Cedar Rapids with WPA labor at an estimated cost of 784.48.

Iowa Town Threatened When Elevator Burns

Fire at Farmers elevator in Cylinder Iowa at 5 am destroyed the building and nearby sheds. It sent six carloads of coal along a railroad track and threatened a second elevator half a block away. The first elevator held 6000 bushels of oats. Emmetsburg firefighters aided Cylinder and halted the blaze in the second elevator with 8000 bushels of corn. Winds from the northwest helped save the town.

The Iowa Taxpayers Association re-elected all officers at its annual meeting closing session. Francis Johnson Terrill remains president, George E. Pike Waterloo vice president, J. C.
