Downtown Cedar Rapids urged to raise bargain parking rates

Edward Purcell of Burke Inc urged Cedar Rapids to raise parking prices in the loop and to encourage private operators. The preliminary Burke study calls for higher meters, stricter overtime penalties and fees for Thursday and Monday shopping evenings to draw shoppers to off street parking. Purcell noted 700 spaces could be added under the proposed bridge and dam, while a 80,000 square foot library would have little effect on parking. He also favored more downtown spaces possibly along First Avenue West.
