Denver. Arraignment of John Graham on libel murder charges in the air liner bomb plot crash that killed 44 was postponed eleven days to secure adequate counsel. Judge James Noland granted the continuance at the request of Graham’s temporary attorney J. R. Strickland, who took the case on Monday. Graham was urged to arrange counsel by November 28. Strickland had sought thirty days, but the county attorney objected. Graham appeared sullen as proceedings ended and he returned to the county jail.

Russell Kern 62 longtime Tama County sheriff died after a weeklong illness in a Marshalltown hospital. He served five terms as sheriff and earlier worked nine years as a State Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent. A 1:30 p.m. prayer service will be at Henderson funeral home followed by 2:30 p.m. funeral at the Traer Congregational church. Burial in Buckingham cemetery, Traer. Man Saves Dagger From Car in Creek Near Vinton
Cedar Rapids salesman Glen Dagger, 47, was trapped upside down in six feet of water after his car plunged into a creek three miles south and two miles west of Vinton. William Herber, 29, of Cedar Rapids, on a hunting trip, waded through icy water, forced a door open, and, with the help of a farmer and a tractor, dragged the car to shore. Herber then crawled into the vehicle, freeing Dagger as he held his breath with only about 12 inches of air remaining.

Phone Company To Boost Iowa Rates In November
Northwestern Bell Cedar Rapids manager E. H. Knudsen announced rate increases for many Iowa long distance calls effective November 28. The initial three minute period will rise by five cents for most station to station calls and five or ten cents for person to person calls, with some rates unchanged. Knudsen cited higher costs of providing service as the reason for the boosts.

The presidential plane Columbine III developed engine trouble over the Atlantic while flying Secretary of State Dulles home from Geneva but landed safely in Bermuda. A Military Air Transport plane was dispatched from Washington to pick up Dulles and assist the Columbine to Bermuda. A rescue plane was sent to escort the aircraft to Bermuda.
