McGuffey Readers shaped US reading education
William Holmes McGuffey conceived basal readers used to teach reading across seven levels from Primer to Sixth Reader. Published from 1836, they educated about eight percent of American children for decades, popular in the West and South, emphasizing daily life and moral lessons. The McGuffey Ash at the University of Virginia ties to his work, and he taught there for 28 years before dying in 1873.
