Grant beer permit at disputed site by city council

The city council granted a beer permit for 80 Sixteenth Avenue SW to Frank H. Coats after earlier reversals involving Kubovec and Hubacek. The process included a rejected permit for Louis J. Bena, police report concerns, and shifts led by Finance Commissioner Burgos and Chief Vladh Was. Mayor Hahn said the aim was to resolve the beer question and approve Coats as a fit applicant.

Ralph Fuhrmeister Named Head of Sheridan Chamber

Ralph S. Fuhrmeister of Sheridan Wyoming, former Cedar Rapids resident, was elected president of the Sheridan chamber of commerce last week. He is secretary treasurer of the Smith Close company at Sheridan and a Washington high school and Iowa State College alumnus. He is brother of Mrs. H J Achter and of Nellie, Clara, and Luther Fuhrmeister, all of Cedar Rapids.

Miss Mary Christmas Contest Opens Nominating Girls

Entries close Thursday November 19 for the Miss Mary Christmas pageant in Cedar Rapids. Fifteen to eighteen year old girls from northeast Iowa may enter by naming their pick on an entry blank. The winner will ride as queen on a Santa Claus parade float November 27 with judges chosen by the Chamber of Commerce.

Pair Held For Theft Of Clothing Returned To Jones Authorities

Garsia, 28, and Salvador Luna, 27, were brought back by police from Anamosa and held for investigation in the theft of twelve suits from Clark's clothing store. They were arraigned in Justice Reed's court and pled not guilty to grand larceny with bonds set at $1,000 each. They were released to Jones county authorities and will be returned to Cedar Rapids after disposition of charges. Anamosa police and Jones county officers coordinated the transfer.

Two Boys Arrested Over Theft Of Des Moines Car

Robert McNabb and Earl Hayes both 14 and 15 from Iowa City were captured in Des Moines after a weekend car theft spree. They admitted stealing a car in Iowa City and driving to Cedar Rapids then to Des Moines before abandoning one car and taking another until running out of gas. They were on parole for car theft in Iowa City and are being returned to Cedar Rapids for questioning.

P.T.A. Praises City Support for Diphtheria Immunization

Cedar Rapids P.T.A. council thanks the city for a 250 donation used in a citywide diphtheria immunization drive conducted last fall. The effort, led by Mrs. S. V. Shonka and Mrs. W. D. Elder, immunized 2,500 children and positioned Cedar Rapids as a leader among middle western cities in diphtheria prevention.

Junior Red Cross Plays Big Part In Worthy Activities

Approximately 10 000 Cedar Rapids and Linn county school children are enrolled under the Junior Red Cross. Miss Dorothy Dvorak, chairman, reports on the branch with a 65 member council meeting monthly at the YMC A. Officers include President James Baba, Vice President Mildred Burke, Secretary Mary Jeanne Palmer, and Treasurer Helen Shields. Destinations of gifts include Veterans Hospitals in Des Moines and Knoxville, orphans at the Iowa Soldiers Home in Davenport, the Iowa School for the Blind in Vinton, the Community House in Cedar Rapids, and the Home for Aged Women. Programs for Mother's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter featured gifts and egg distributions to the city’s less fortunate children.

The city plan commission approved a new police station site at Third Street and Second Avenue SW and filed the resolution with the city council. It suggested locating the station near the block's established residential line and adding space for proper landscaping.
