High tech eyes on Madison bridges in Iowa
Iowa State University engineers near Ames are testing a 24 hour remote monitoring system for the Bridges of Madison County. The setup uses flame detectors infrared cameras and fiber optic strain gauges to log heat measure temperature changes and alert authorities if danger rises. The effort follows arson damage to the Cedar and Hogback bridges in 2002 and 2003 with officials hopeful this proactive approach will deter vandals.
