The Iowa Public Television network will not televise the state volleyball finals live from the U.S. Cellular Center. A 90 minute highlight package will air Friday November 22 at 8 30 p m. IPTV cites budget cuts and the economic climate as the reason for the tape delay. The finals begin with Class 1A at 5 p m followed by 2A and 3A finals.
Tom Keating, Wahlert athletics director and longtime coach, blends detail oriented practice with humor and high standards. His players praise his open door policy and approachability while acknowledging his proven success and limited college recognition.
Lindsey van Wyk, a senior 5-10 outside hitter for Pella Christian, is the career leader in kills and digs. She averages 4.65 kills and 4.79 digs per game with a .390 kill efficiency, earning 1A second-team all-state honors and high school statistics praised by coach John Evenhouse as intensely focused and a top left-side blocker.
Senior middle blocker Crystal Hanson, 6-0, 2A second team all-state as a junior, posts 3.54 kills and 1.95 blocks per game with a .353 kill efficiency. State high jump champion owns a 25 inch vertical and will play for Northern Iowa next year. Coach Cindy Holmes praises her improved jumping, strength, hitting against blockers, serving and passing.
Stephanie May of Dubuque Wahlert High School, outside hitter, stands 5-8 as a senior. She earned Class 3A first team all-state honors in 2000 and 2001 and was an elite all-stater as a junior, averaging 4.50 kills and 3.14 digs per match with a .399 kill efficiency. She will exit Wahlert as the program's career digs leader. Coach Tom Keating praises her power, shot variety, defense, consistency, and coachability.
Ames senior Julie McElroy, 6-1, earns Class 3A second team all state as a junior. She posts 3.58 kills per game with .406 hitting and adds 2.87 digs and 0.90 blocks per game. Coach James Brockway praises her leadership, intelligence, captaincy, and 4.0 GPA with a 31 ACT.
Megan Netboom, a 5th through 8th grade student at Unity Christian, earns Class 2A second‑team all state honors as senior and posts 8.31 assists per game with a .445 hitting efficiency. Coach Wendy Poppema praises her third varsity year and leadership on the floor guiding a 5‑1 offense despite under 200 kills.
Danielle Pegram earns Class 1A first-team all-state as a junior and fourth-team as a sophomore. She averages 5.27 kills, .498 hitting, 2.62 digs, and 1.11 blocks per game for Grandview Park, leading in kills since freshman year and set to play at Southeast Missouri State next season. Coach Matt Thompson hails her all-around impact and smart hitting.
Erica Schlotfeldt of Rock Valley is a 5-11 senior setter and standout guard. She earned fifth-team basketball honors as a sophomore and contributes 7.65 assists 1.66 kills and 0.73 aces per game with a .340 kill efficiency. Coach Sue Kooima notes she has started as setter for four years and excels in clutch moments.
