Six Belgians rescue hostages on bus siege at Brussels radio center

Iowa foster care study urges alternatives to removal

A yearlong study by a 16 member Iowa panel and DSS staff says the foster care system may harm children and urges more emphasis on keeping children with their birth families. It recommends funding for in home or community based services, better screening and training of foster parents, and a probationary period to test placements.

The House approved a three year extension of a 4.6 billion dollar revenue sharing program for local governments through Sept. 30, 1983 and 2.3 billion annually for states in 1982 and 1983. Senate action is pending with limited time before adjournment, leaving the outcome uncertain.

Senate votes to curb busing in justice cases

The Carter administration warns a conservative Senate move to deny the Justice Department its last resort in court-ordered busing could cripple efforts to end public school discrimination. Barn destroyed by morning fire at Henderson farm near Coggon

Fire destroyed a barn at the Merle and Verla Henderson farm west of Coggon after milking 40 cows at 8 am. Mrs Henderson and son Rick 25 watched flames. Central City Coggan and Troy Mills firefighters fought the blaze. Cows were saved but milking equipment and 6000 bales of hay were lost.
