According to a survey by the Chicago board of the nation's larger supermarkets: A majority already have converted to the new system. or plan to do so before year end. Retailers have been distributing a “Beef Buying and Cooking Guide" at the rate of SO.IOO per week and, in most cases, absorbing this expense themselves. At least 32 states have passed or have launched state wide voluntary programs to adopt the new standards. In fact, the new system has so impressed the U.S. department of agriculture that it is now considering a proposal to make the labeling rules mandatory on all retail ruts of meat coming from federally ms-l>eeted meat plants (about half of all meat) Meanwhile, if your local food store or supermarket has not installed the new meat labeling system, ask the manager why not; urge him to do so; and study what information does now appear on the store's meat ‘labels. Here are two new clues on labeling improvements to look for in the immediate future. (I) On Dec. 8, a new “open dating" regulation will go into effect, giving you. for the first time, major guides on how fresh are the meat and poultry you are buying ender the new regulations, the calendar date stamped on A meat package must be identified as "packing date," “sell by date," or “use before date." Judge Denies Prisoner’s Right To Conjugal Sex NEW YORK (UPI) -Prisoners have no constitutional right Ho conjugal sex, a New York court ruled "Denial of conjugal rights to prisoners,” Judge John Can-nella said. “is an accepted result of confinement and such deprivations cannot be said to abridge any right guaranteed by the Constitution.” Leonard Porter, 48 and married, in prison for manslaughter, sued for conjugal visits. He said denial of “sexual visitations" deprived him of his rights to due process and equal protection under the law and exposed him to cruel and unusual punishment. In addition. Porter said, the denial of permission to have relations with his wife deprives him of his right to medical treatment for his alleged “homosexual tendencies.” “While other nations have experimented with the ides of sexual visitations." Cannelle said, “the court knows of no case w hich requires or permits such practices in the United States.” ON THIS DATE in 1842. air ace Eddie Kiekenbaeker and seven other Americans were rescued from a life raft. 23 days after their plane had gone down in the Pacific. Many food processors and retailers have gone ahead on their own. heating this deadline The dating regulation is voluntary, will not force meat processors and retailers to switch from their cryptic codes to plain, understandable package dating. But many processors will join the increasing numbers already using open dating to help consumers in shopping and comparing Open dating also helps retailers with stock rotation Of rears*, open dating aion* cannot guarantee quality or wholesomeness, for a crucial factor in these is proper handling and storage of the food from processor to consumer. But you and I will, in many cases, now be able to tell which meat and poultry products are the freshest and, therefore, which we can safely store for Sylvia Porter the longest period in our own refrigerators. And if the stores reporting to the Meat Board continue to follow through on their stated plans, there is absolutely no doubt that progress in our favor will have been made in a crucial area on a broad front.
