St. Louis slugger Mark McGwire smiles as he rounds the bases after his 70th home run. McGwire says he plans to retire from baseball, ending a standout season.
Ichiro Suzuki of Seattle claimed the American League Rookie of the Year with 27 of 28 first place votes, the second straight Japanese winner. Albert Pujols of St. Louis earned the National League honor unanimously with all 32 first place votes, the ninth NL rookie to be named unanimous.
Washington Wizards games will be televised more widely as Turner Sports adds two December matchups on TNT and NBC to air three additional dates. The 2-5 team now has eight Turner telecasts this season with a December 12 home vs Miami and December 26 road vs Charlotte on TNT. NBC already scheduled three Wizards telecasts on November 3 December 1 and January 19.
