Rail worker blamed for crash fired in Iowa derailment

Amtrak Train Collision in Boston Rush Hour

Firefighters removed an injured person from a collision between two Amtrak commuter trains at a Boston station during the morning rush. At least 110 people were hurt, six seriously, and many passengers were forced to move through a dark smoky tunnel to safety.

Doctors face scrutiny as Rand study flags unnecessary surgeries

Los Angeles Times reports Rand Corp researchers reviewed thousands of case histories and found three common medical procedures often performed unnecessarily. Endarterectomies, coronary angiography, and upper GI endoscopy showed 32.4 percent inappropriate and 32.3 percent equivocal indications, with carotid endarterectomies most often flagged. Over 100,000 carotid procedures occur annually in the United States.
