Echizen jellyfish hit Japan fishing hard off east coast
Huge Nomura jellyfish weighing up to 440 pounds and six feet across swarm the Japan Sea area, damaging fixed nets and reducing fish freshness. Off Niigata Prefecture a dozen fishermen salvaged few yellowtails, discarding jellyfish after two hours of disposal. Researchers cite nutrient runoff and warmer waters driving blooms.

Quake signals may offer early warning seconds
A study by Richard M. Allen and Erik L. Olson shows that faint initial P waves from faults carry frequency clues that can indicate an earthquake’s size and location within two to four seconds. The research, published in Nature, suggests short term warnings rather than long term prediction.
