New York engineers unveil a chocolate flavored additive sold in one ounce envelopes to avoid melting. A test cake uses three envelopes folded into cake batter for a layer cake with chocolate shadows on white frosting. The piece recounts rail history from 1934 as diesel engines replaced steam and reduced crews.
The Burlington route retires its last steam locomotives by 1952, leaving only two steamers for special railfan trips, as diesel power leads the future of freight service. Chicago dispatch notes that thirty years ago the first Diesel powered streamlined train began the end of the Age of Steam. The three car Zephyr on the Burlington Route between Lincoln Nebraska and Kansas City Missouri used a 660 horsepower Diesel electric locomotive and cost $200 000.
