Glenn Smith, 23, of Toledo, Ohio, pled guilty to second degree grand larceny after admitting to stealing about $25,000 in raids on hundreds of churches across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. He was sentenced to up to five years in a Minnesota state prison. Police planned to question him further before commitment.
Ford Motor Co backed the CIO United Auto Workers stance that Ohio ballot results do not reflect view on layoff pay. The UAW expects layoff pay to proceed. Ford and GM had signed contracts authorizing 65 percent pay during 26 weeks of idle time, effective June 1, 1956.
Milwaukee AP reports the Rev. Victor K. Wrigley of Brookfield Wisconsin was found guilty on five of six counts of doctrinal deviation in the Northwest Synod of the United Lutheran Church trial. A suspension from his pulpit was recommended.
Dr. Merillat criticizes state thriftiness and predicts Iowa will rely more on county homes for patients and private psychiatry for treatment. He notes a rise in practicing psychiatrists and anticipates state hospitals serving chronic, incurable patients while treatment moves to private facilities and hospital wings. Margaret Kagarice of Iowa State College becomes president elect of the Iowa Health Council, with officers named and Wilbur R. Quinn as executive secretary.
W J Muzik 68 president of the Czechoslovak Society of America died Thursday after months of illness. He had visited Cedar Rapids several times, most recently for the 1954 observance of the CSA's 100 years in fraternal insurance service. Funeral services will be held Monday in Chicago.
Robert Clark Shaffer a Cedar Rapids resident for 40 years and a retired Milwaukee railroad switchman died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 11 10 p m Thursday after a brief illness He was born December 10 1887 in Gladstone and came to Cedar Rapids from Savannah Georgia in 1925 Surviving are his former wife Louise Shaffer four daughters Beatrice Scholzen of Racine Wisconsin Mrs Clifford McConaughy of Tacoma Washington and Mrs Joe Simoosky and Mrs Russell Taylor both of Cedar Rapids a son Richard of Cedar Rapids a brother William Shaffer of Brooklyn Iowa 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren Services will be at Turner chapel at 1 30 p m Monday by Rev Frank Ward Burial will be in Tama Cemetery Friends may call at the chapel
James LeRoy Willson 83 a Cedar Rapids resident for 33 years and former painter and decorator died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 2:15 p m Thursday after a brief illness He was born November 1 1869 in Linn county Survivors include three sons Robert A Willson Calvin Willson and James Willson three grandchildren two great grandchildren a sister Lena Bixby and two other relatives He was a member of Central Park Presbyterian church and Knights of Pythias Graveside services will be at Woodlawn cemetery Oelwein at 1 p m Saturday with the Rev Reuben Tjaden Friends may call at Turner chapel
Funeral services for Harvey Lew Coats, longtime Cedar Rapids resident and retired barber, will be held in Turner chapel at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with Dr. Jackson Burns officiating. Burial is slated for Linwood cemetery. Surviving, besides his wife, are a son Harvey M. Coats of Westfield New Jersey, two sisters Elva Park Mae Mohr both of Victor, four brothers Willard Coats Victor Charles Coats Brooklyn Iowa Blaine Coats Fort Collins Colorado James Coats California and three other relatives.
John L. Musel aged 68 of 1416 Fifth Street NW dies from a heart ailment. Funeral services are at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Church Tama with burial in the church cemetery. Rosary at 8 p.m. Sunday at Mason Funeral Home Tama. He was a retired North Western railroad man last working as flagman at State Street crossing. Surviving are his wife two daughters Agnes Fish and Mildred Brown and several brothers and sisters including Mrs P W Higginbotham of Tama.
Jennie Payn 82 widow of Clarence Payn and former Cedar Rapids resident died in Chicago Thursday morning. Survived by son Theodore of Chicago and sister Edna Henderschott of Stanford Montana. Body to Turner chapel Tuesday with graveside services at Linwood Cemetery at 4 p.m. Conducted by Rev D A Loferski of St John’s Episcopal Church.

Cedar Rapids merchants voted at a Friday meeting not to extend night openings amid a bus strike. After a noon session of the Retail Merchants bureau, stores will follow the original Christmas schedule with openings Friday and two extra evenings between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The proposed plan to add one weeknight night each week was rejected.
Special to The Gazette reports two well known Northeast Iowa farmers were hospitalized after a head-on crash on a gravel road about seven miles north of Garnaville Thursday afternoon. Lloyd Mueller 61 of near McGregor suffered a fractured pelvis and other injuries. Elmer Meyer 52 of near Garnaville was treated and listed in good condition. Meyer rode in a car driven by his son Dean 22 who was uninjured. Both cars were demolished. The accident was investigated by Sheriff Forrest Fisher and Highway Patrolman Virgil Stanmeyer.
The NCAA said the unauthorized telecast of the Wisconsin Illinois game by KRNT TV Des Moines violated agreements with CBS. The District 4 CBS telecast will not be released Saturday in Iowa.
Three teenage boys ages 14 and 15 escaped a Toledo Iowa juvenile home Tuesday night and were captured near Rochester Minnesota early Thursday. They stole five automobiles during the escape spanning Toledo Osage Iowa and Winnebago Kasson Lewiston Minnesota, with Winona County authorities alerting Rochester police.
New Orleans AP report says district attorney refused to file murder charges against Mary Moss Falcon 27 in poison deaths of two young brothers. DA cites no evidence basis found by police.
Hagerstown Indiana November 1959 workers at Perfect Circle main plant in Hagerstown and at Richmond voted two to one against the CIO United Auto Workers union to represent them. NLRB said about 95 percent of workers participated. The firm makes piston rings and had a riot incident at its New Castle foundry last month. that facility was not part of the vote.

Washington AP The Federal Communications Commission voted to keep current allocations of VHF and UHF channels in the same areas at least for now. It rejected 35 requests to deintermix UHF and VHF channels and ordered a nationwide study on expansion difficulties. Petitioners said UHF stations struggle against VHF in shared markets.

DES MOINES AP Iowa's population rose 25 000 in the last year alongside a 69 000 gain since 1950. The Census Bureau notes increases from July 1 1950 to July 1 1954 totaled 44 000, and as of July 1 1955 the current estimate stands at about 2 690 000.
Washington DC Catholic officials announced a new translation of seven Old Testament books defined in modern language from the Douay version. The update aims to make the scripture more accessible to contemporary readers and reflects ongoing scholarship within the church.

GLENCOE Minn AP an impromptu farewell party for a youth entering service ended tragically when a car carrying six teens was struck by a Milwaukee passenger train at the depot crossing in Plato. The engineer said the train was near 70 to 75 mph. Names included Robert Luedtke 18 Roger Frauendiest 17 Milton Brelje 16 Margaret Fuller 15 Maurice Olson 14 and Kari Olson 16. The car was obliterated and bodies lay along the tracks for 200 yards. Mrs Joey Olson 36 is in shock. her husband died last July.
Police say Ira H. Yarrington and his wife attended a tavern gathering with his brother and sister-in-law before returning home where an argument and stabbing occurred. Mrs. Yarrington was wounded in shoulder, arm, and abdomen. Yarrington fled, was stopped after a high speed chase near Mechanicsville, and taken to Cedar Rapids hospital. He waived extradition to Illinois after a brief hearing ordered by Judge Penningroth.
DETROIT UP The CIO United Auto Workers reversed its previous rejection of Ford Motor Company’s cut rate stock plan and requested a chance to participate. UAW Local 600 President Carl Stellato urged that workers who helped build the company deserve first opportunity to buy Ford stock when the plan opens to the public, anticipated in January by Ford Foundation announcement in New York.
Ottumwa waterworks superintendent George Ahrens urged state action on water rights and drainage to support farm irrigation amid drought fears. He noted a 1956 legislative committee will draft bills on water use and federal aid, with reports due November 15, 1956. The Iowa Natural Resources Council backed two federal dam projects near Des Moines to reduce floods and boost storage.
Davenport AP A safe burglary at Jack and Bills tavern revealed thousands missing. Owner William Burda said he had collected 4800 by cashing checks over the weekend. Loss amount not yet precise. Thieves peeled the safe and entered by cutting a hole in a meat door and lifting a bar on the door. Some money also taken from three pinball machines.
President Eisenhower said illness knows no politics as he shook hands with Colorado Governor Ed Johnson who suffered a coronary thrombosis similar to the President. He remarked that they “belong to the same club now,” noting Johnson is a Democrat.
