Washington AP report says Howard Hughes accused Senate investigators of pressuring federal tax officials to assess about 6 million dollars in additional taxes against him. He disputed Senator Williams claims and said the tax matter was irrelevant to the inquiry into his war time plane contracts. He denied offering money to Meyers to influence a ban on his film The Outlaw and defended his actions as not employing Meyers. He insisted the cross examination was improper.

Sporman Wins Right To Build 56 Apartments

Noontime tieup in Cedar Rapids lasted 18 minutes as a Rock Island freight train coupled knuckle snapped blocking First Second and Third avenues. Judge Moffit Dead at Tipton after long illness
Judge John T. Moffit 85 retired district jurist died early Tuesday at his Tipton home after a long illness. He served 27 years on the bench in Cedar Rapids Anamosa Tipton and was buried in Tipton funeral home arrangements were pending. He was born near Mechanicsville July 8 1862 and educated at Cornell College and the University of Michigan. He had a long public career including state senator Cedar County attorney Tipton council and Tipton mayor with military service from 1879 to 1884 and as Iowa National Guard officer. Surviving are daughter Margaret Platner Evanston Ill brother W A Moffit Mechanicsville and two sisters.
