A sample of 25 Iowa counties shows next year’s direct property tax for county city town and school support rising to about 99.75 million dollars, first time near the 100 million mark since 1930. City and town levies rise in most counties while school levies climb in nearly all, reflecting local tax pressure as state taxes fall.
Iowa commercial fisherman Dave Mead weighed a 50 pound buffalo and a 25 pound catfish from his McGregor float. Mead, fishing 35 years, says buffalo grow large but not as big as catfish or sturgeon. Big buffalo and catfish fetch strong market demand for steaks.
West Union Charles Kohler and his son Carl were approached by two gypsy women while securing their home. One begged for medicine, the other questioned the elder Kohler about religious matters. About $20 was found missing. deputies later captured the women in New Hampton. The pair returned $17 and paid sheriff fees.
Maynard reports the marriage of Miss Sitings to Max Rath son of Mr and Mrs aa Rath of Oelwein on November 3 at Kahoka Me Mrs Rath is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Trotter The couple will reside in Oelwein where Mr Rath is employed.
Dr. Rozeboom, a 33-year-old entomologist from Orange City Iowa, receives medicine's top honor and a $1 000 bronze medal for identifying a suspected malaria carrier in troops. He describes tropical mosquito breeding in Trinidad and Panama and is a Johns Hopkins professor.
Dr. J. W. Marlin delivered the Armistice day address in the La Porte City high school auditorium Tuesday morning, sharing reflections on veterans and peace with students and community members.

Joseph W. Wells died Monday in Fergus Falls Minnesota. Born November 13 1882 near Marion he was a farmer who lived in North and South Dakota and Minnesota. Survived by daughter Ethel Mengler sons Donald Wells Clifford Wells and three brothers. Body to be brought to Marion for funeral and burial.
Weekend guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Oliver included Sister Mary Ethelbert and Sister Mary Amy from St. Dorothy's Convent Chicago and Mrs. George Cummings with her son Paul from Marshalltown. Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Dale Morgan and daughter Barbara Dale, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Flemming with sons Gene and Donny from Des Moines. The Rev. T. J. McElliott attended dinner Saturday. On Monday the group traveled to Dubuque to visit St. Joseph's Convent and then returned home.
Mrs. B. E. Beiber of 714 Tenth Street hosted the Merv-Micks club Monday. Pinochle was played at two tables with Mrs. Lloyd Stark winning first prize, Mrs. C. A. Trask second prize, and Mrs. B. E. Beiber taking the consolation prize.
Guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold B. Phillips include Mrs. Will Bliss of Esmond South Dakota George Barnes and Mr. and Mrs. Sutliff Barnes with daughter Audrey of De Sotos Dakota They accompanied the body of Mr. Bliss to Walker for burial.

The Christian church choir meets Wednesday at 7 30 p m in the church for rehearsal. The junior choir will meet after school Wednesday at the church for rehearsal.
The Rev H E Trimble, who led a recent series of services at Second Christian church in Cedar Rapids, visited Trimble Sunday night and Monday and returned to Centerville Monday night. He is a former pastor of Marion Christian church.
Mr and Mrs W W Lary and Marjorie and Robert Lary are listed as students at Iowa State College.
Te Springville-Shirley Jean Collis of Chicago marimbist will be soloist Friday at 8 p.m. at Spring ville school. Her father Rev R H Collis former Marion church pastor will read Trees with her on marimba. She is a soloist at Austin high school Chicago, program includes Kreisler pieces Flight of the Bumble Bee Wieniawski Polonaise Brillante and Bells of St Marys.
Mrs. Pat McCann and others from Marion and Cedar Rapids attend noted gatherings. Marion Nature and Garden club plans a Wednesday afternoon event. Andréw P. Munson leads discussion on Gilbert and Sullivan at the Ivanhoe club meeting with 14 present at Mrs. Ralph Seager’s home.
Red Cross Unit No 1 will meet Thursday at 10 am for an all day sewing session in the Red Cross room.
Gladbrook groom Curtis Hass, 25, pled guilty to forgery in Tama County District Court. Judge B O Tankersley suspended a 10 year sentence after finding restitution paid in full. Hass was paroled to attorney J S Bauch. Appeal bond set at 3000 dollars.
The Katherine Blinks division of the Methodist W S C S will meet Thursday at 2 30 p m with Mrs Minnie Schenken at 520 Avenue. Mrs Owen Turner will lead the program.
The Methodist choir will meet for rehearsal on Wednesday at 7 30 p m at the church.

Mrs Raymond Daum hosted the Friendly Dozen club luncheon on her birthday. Bunco earned Mrs Daum the first prize, Mrs John Byse took the second prize, and Mrs Gallagher won the consolation prize.

Gov. George A. Wilson refused a 30 day reprieve for Ivan Sullivan, condemned for the slaying of Fort Madison guard Robert Hart during an attempted prison delivery. Sullivan, 30, pleaded guilty to murder and was scheduled for execution on Wednesday morning at Fort Madison penitentiary.
