A severe blizzard swept eastward across western Iowa causing heavy drifting and highway closures. Snow and high winds halted traffic north and south of Spencer, delayed trains, and shuttered schools while telephones failed and planes were grounded. Temperatures plunged with subzero readings in the northwest and brisk cold across the state.

A blizzard halted searchers for an Army Air Forces plane believed to have crashed in Spirit Lake Sunday night. Three crewmen were aboard the missing craft scheduled to cross the lake area from Fort Crook Nebraska. Residents heard a plane circling then a loud splash followed by silence as snow and wind reduced visibility to under 100 feet. Coroner B W Jones and Sheriff J L McQuirk said army officers at Fort Crook believed the missing plane might have sunk in the lake. Lieutenant Robert M Prange of Scott was the pilot.
A west windstorm felled trees and poles east of Cedar Rapids and Marion cutting power 8:35 to 11:30 am. Downed lines extended to Mount Vernon and Anamosa, with Cedar Rapids and Marion restored within hours. A hotel window was shattered and Dr L C Dow injured by debris.
On Armistice day 1940 a brief ceremony on the Cedar Rapids plaza honored Spanish and World War veterans, reservists, and guardsmen. Coe R O T C cadets carried colors amid wind and snow as the Coe military band played the national anthem and an American Legion rifle squad fired a salute while bugles sounded taps.
London reports a state funeral is planned for former Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain who died at 71 in Hampshire. The death comes as Britain faced nightly German air raids and as Churchill and other leaders mourn a pivotal figure of appeasement and the events leading to war. The body is expected to be brought to London for the service despite ongoing air raids.
New York AP reports Wendell L. Willkie will answer supporters questions tonight from 9:30 to 10 p.m. Iowa time. He will outline our course for the Republican opposition and advise cooperation with the administration on defense with war aid to Britain, while acting as a check on power. He plans to visit Rushville, Indiana, with Mrs. Willkie after the broadcast.
A small white dog found at the Upshaw farmyard in Cartersville after two days of rain prompted state authorities to search for 2-year-old Murray Upshaw Jr. The dog's dry coat sparked theories the child was abducted, as officials questioned cars in the vicinity.
The Associated Press reports early national totals from 120,620 of 127,345 precincts with Roosevelt at 26,361,762 and Willkie 21,876,719. Michigan and Indiana show close results with Willkie leading in Michigan by narrow margins and Roosevelt trailing in Indiana with small gaps.

Police hunt the former cook dismissed for unsatisfactory service who allegedly threatened to get even. Adjutant Roy Barber says roach powder may have been mixed into pancake batter. Dr. Robert Kooser at St Francis hospital reports pancake eaters were the ones stricken.
AP reports Rep. Karl LeCompte says the War Department will hold a Tuesday hearing in Washington to revisit locating the Seventh Army Corps training area at Rolla Missouri instead of near Lineville Iowa due to inadequate water supply for 30,000 troops. LeCompte plans to meet Senator Clyde Herring in Chicago to press Iowa's case.
President Roosevelt spoke from Arlington National Cemetery on Armistice Day stating democracy would survive and that Americans who died in 1917 and 1918 did not sacrifice in vain. He warned against unpatriotic efforts seeking to claim sacrifices were meaningless. The American Legion sponsored the ceremony.
