Prof. Wendell Johnson of the University of Iowa will receive a $1000 prize from the Institute of Humanities of Colorado Springs. He plans a child’s book about an endlessly thrilling search for better beliefs and worlds. The presentation airs at 6:10 p.m. on KCRI TV channel 9 with Walter Shupp and Dr. Johnson attesting.
Newark Evening News said 500 FBI agents worked a year to contact suspected communists in government through Elizabeth Bentley in the Harry Dexter White case. The agency gave up in January 1947 after failing to re establish Bentley contacts and White and 30 others were dismissed. The grand jury later indicted top American Communist leaders but not White.
Hyman B. Zelen, 46, Lincoln, Neb., agent for the Duncan Parking Corporation, waived arraignment in Sioux City on a conspiracy charge connected with the city installing 1,000 parking meters. A $1,500 bond was set. Zelen, the Duncan firm, and Sioux City fruit broker Sabel were indicted by a panel jury. Judge Crazy gave Zelen until Nov 23 to plead.
President Eisenhower named A Alexis Johnson deputy assistant secretary of state for Far Eastern affairs as ambassador to Czechoslovakia. Johnson a career foreign service officer since 1935 is a native of Falun Kansas and a resident of Glendale California.
A Memorial Commission and city council feud flared as 15 circus trucks parked in drive lanes drew tickets for fire exits. Commissioner Pilicer accuses the council of bias while Prochaska seeks a joint meeting to sort control over loading spaces at Cedar Rapids Memorial Coliseum.
New York AP. Deliveries for 8 727 Conant freight cars in October rose to a yearly high, per the American Railway Car Institute and Association of American Railroads. They compared with 5 706 cars in September and 5 437 in October last year.
Tuesday secret balloting by Linn Bar is reported with five tellers under President Crissman. Attorney Gray announces Patterson and Benesh won a majority. The Bar backs the recommendation and gears up for a move to establish a new municipal court, with Crissman authorized to form a coordinating committee. The state attorney general's letter says the new court can start once officers are appointed and qualified.
Manila reports early returns favoring Ramon Magsaysay over Elpidio Quirino in what observers call the least violent presidential election in seven years. unofficial tallies show Magsaysay leading nationwide with tens of thousands of votes. fatalities from Tuesday balloting total eight, including a Cavite ambush where four died and a 16 year old son of a Nacionalista leader was wounded.
Washington AP reports the Agriculture Department lowered the 1951 corn crop estimate to 3 180 430 000 bushels for this year. The figure is 15 671 000 bushels below last month and contrasts with last year's 3 216 007 000 and the 10 year average of 3 036 380 000.
Iowa estimates on November 1 place the 1953 corn yield at 53 bushels per acre totaling 589,142,000 bushels, more than 100 million bushels below 1952. A month earlier the Crop Land Livestock Service projected 55 bushels per acre for 605,660,000 bushels.

A blaze at a destroyed apartment warehouse at Lemoore air field killed three people. The victims are identified as 50 year old Mrs. Jesse PUckett, 14 year old Patsy, and 9 year old Joe.

Judgments in three account suits award Mercy Hospital against Luther and Helen 334.31, Mercy Hospital against Glenn and Lois McMurrin 17660, and Merle R Schroeder against Robert Matthews 203.7. Daniel and Mamie Moore filed a 642.68 suit against Josephine and Robert E Taylor on a promissory note. Hilda Raynery filed suit on separate matter against her.
The New York Post reports a radar probe witness who allegedly confessed to lying about a spy ring has been cleared and restored to his Fort Monmouth New Jersey job. The witness collapsed emotionally during a closed senate subcommittee hearing amid family bereavement and intense questioning by Sen McCarthy.
Ernest Ole Lindquist, 63, once labeled the forgotten man, faces a final hearing in Omaha on November 25 to decide if ton charges will be dropped. Omaha immigration and naturalization officers say evidence of his two pardons, including a 1908 burglary pardon in Pardons, will be presented to a department of justice special inquiry officer. Lindquist must show cause why he should not be deported as an undesirable alien.
Coroner Dr. Charles D. Fenton testified in the Walter Mayer murder trial that John C. Wisdom showed no evidence of a fight when found dead from gunshot wounds. He described the scene with a hat behind the head and a clean face, noting two bullet wounds and a closed sweater over a shirt.
The Cedar Rapids Civic Orchestra opens with a 7 PM rehearsal in the Board of Education exhibit room under Henry Denecke. Frances Cerny 84 of Fairfax route 1 died at home at 3 10 a m Tuesday after a brief illness. Meda Denison 77 a Cedar Rapids resident for 30 years died Sunday night at Center Point after a long illness. She previously lived in Urbana and Center Point. The Rev. Wenceslaus Panek aged 65 died Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. He lived much of his life in Chelsea. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Kuba funeral home.

He urged Currie be brought in for vigorous examination as part of the probe. Currie denied the 1948 allegations.

Jessie Miller of Waterloo is hospitalized with head injuries after falling from an ambulance eight miles east of Cedar Rapids on U S 30. Grace Poyner of Mt. Auburn reported the door flew open as the vehicle rode, and Miller tumbled onto the pavement before being placed back inside.
