In Eastern Iowa Tuesday, a 1.9 million Johnson County jail and sheriff office bond passed countywide 9,722 to 3,146 amid heavy turnout. Sheriff Gary Hughes called it essential as the total package reached about 6.5 million with a parking ramp. Iowa City approved the jail but rejected a tenant landlord ordinance 4,636 to 5,775, as critics warned of higher rents and constitutionality concerns. North Liberty voters also rejected a measure in Johnson County.
A major pre-winter storm moved from Nebraska into western and northwest Iowa bringing blizzard conditions and over four inches of snow. The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for extreme northwest Iowa and adjoining areas. Snow amounts and wind gusts created low visibilities and travel advisories across western Iowa with temperatures dropping into the 30s.
