Cedar Rapids approved the plan to annex 1214 square miles west and south of town by 844 votes from a 15 616 yes total. The expansion faces court review to show benefits to new areas with possible later timing and potential deletions by the judge. The geographic split favored the northeast while west and south precincts largely opposed the measure.
The Associated Press reports Democrats gained municipal wins in Indiana Pennsylvania and Connecticut with sweeping victories in Kentucky and Philadelphia. Chandler returned as Kentucky governor defeating Denney by land slide while Philadelphia’s Dilworth overwhelmed Longstreth. Democrats also boosted holds in Indiana and Pennsylvania and gained in New York and Connecticut.
In Marion, the Citizens ticket swept the city election. George Brewer won the mayoralty 843 to 327 over Harve E Montgomery. Frank S Fairley and Glenn E Miller were elected councilmen-at-large with 774 and 721 votes. Ward races elected Eckhart, Lanning, Luense and Williams. Vernon Brockman was re-elected city treasurer as no opponent stood. Brewer succeeds L A Franke who did not run.
Leroy Henderson, hired as a janitor, polished windows at the Wyoming statehouse in Cheyenne. He saw boys running in the yard, stuck his head out a closed window to call to them, and was cut over the forehead but not seriously hurt.
Ohio voters defeated a CIO backed plan for supplemental layoff pay and higher unemployment benefits. Unofficial counts showed 857,067 for and 1,436,099 against, with other states moving toward the plan's timing. UAW officials expect rulings to allow simultaneous payments by June 1, 1956 in some states.
Cedar Rapids merchants will discuss keeping shops open one night weekly during the city bus strike. The noon luncheon by the Retail Merchants bureau of the Chamber of Commerce at the Roosevelt hotel will consider Friday night openings plus Saturday and Wednesday nights around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Cedar Rapids voters elected Meaghan mayor elect with a city wide turnout record. He won all 25 precincts over Rob ert J. Vinch by 5,229 votes and plans a possible interim period before January taking the oath and addressing a bus strike while continuing duties with the Raiders baseball club.
Washington Federal Buildings Commissioner Peter A. Strobel resigned Wednesday amid a conflict of interest probe. The General Services Administration accepted the resignation with regret after a House Judiciary subcommittee investigated possible ties between his government role and Strobel and Salzman. Strobel denied any influence of private interests on official actions and said his firm has not benefited directly or indirectly from his official position.
Cedar Rapids observes Veterans Day as a partial holiday with city and county offices closed while many stores and plants stay open. Post office hours are restricted with deliveries only for special mail and windows modestly open until 1 am. A veterans group plans a 10 am parade and commemorative service on Twelfth Street.
In Cedar Rapids new city judges and a bailiff were chosen for four year terms. George E. Farmer unseated incumbent Charles L. Benesh while James E. Patterson led the ticket to re election. Deputy Marvin Fatka defeated Edward D. Cherry by a 5020 vote margin. Patterson carried 23 of 25 precincts as the closest race among Tuesday’s city elections.
