Hearing aids help improve language progress in children with hearing loss
Researchers from the University of Iowa Boys Town and UNC followed 317 children with bilateral hearing loss ages 6 months to 7 years from 2008 to 2012 to assess how well fitting and consistent use of hearing aids affect language, speech, social skills, and reading. They found early aid fitting helps language outcomes, but later fitting can accelerate growth. many aids were not optimally fitted and wear was inconsistent, raising questions for a follow up grant to study reading and junior high social life. Haley Walstrom, a participant, described normal school experience and lack of bullying.
