Iowa voters re elected many incumbents in the 1978 election with statewide results and county tallies across Linn County and others. Democrats made gains nationwide but many incumbents were defeated in key races.
A Coggon man charged with the murder of a 10 month old child pleads guilty or not guilty as prosecutors prepare for trial. The Cedar Rapids Art Center names a new director who plans to start duties in December and pursue a key goal. The city eyes a ground transportation center financed largely by federal funds, with 80 percent of costs covered.

In Des Moines early morning hours, Iowa Republicans surged to a decisive victory over Democrats. Bob Ray defeated Jerry Fitzgerald for governor, Roger Jepsen toppled Dick Clark, and Republicans won back control of the Iowa House and Senate. The day also saw five of six incumbents reelected, with Mike Blouin the lone Democrat unseated.
Davenport reports a stunning upset as Roger Jepsen defeats incumbent Democrat Dick Clark for the Senate. Staffers erupted at 9 40 p m as ABC projected the victory, waking a sleeping Jepsen moments after polls closed.
Judge Anthony Scolaro, 55, of Cedar Rapids, defeated in a recall, defends his record as a strong and honest jurist. He won 11 672 votes to continue four more years while 16 333 voters backed removal. The governor will select his replacement from a nominated list.
Linn County voters approve using up to 1.1 million dollars in federal revenue sharing to obtain county office space. The vote favored locating offices outside the courthouse, likely in the Penick and Ford building, and supported a county home rule amendment. Also noted were retention votes removing Judges Scolaro and Halleck amid reform scrutiny.
The rundown shows Roger Jepsen defeats Dick Clark for U S Senate while Tom Miller tops Richard Turner for attorney general. Melvin Synhurst, Lloyd Smith, Maurice Baringer, and Robert Lounsberry win their GOP– led races. The home rule amendment passes and the Cedar Rapids hotel tax gains approval. Linn County authorizes up to 1.1 million for county office space.
State Rep. Tom Tauke of Dubuque, a 28 year old bachelor, defeats incumbent Mike Blouin to reclaim the 2nd District for Republicans. Tauke wins 72,282 to 64,985, carrying all counties except Dubuque and narrowly taking Linn and Clinton. Blouin sought a third term on his 33rd birthday but loses in a seven county sweep.
