CAPE CANAVERAL AP The Air Force launched its third moon rocket early today but failed to reach outer space as the third stage misfired. The craft rose about 1 000 miles before burning up over east central Africa. Pioneer II concerns raised after delays and prior attempts.
The famed Hope diamond, a 4414 carat blue gem, will be donated by Harry Winston to the U.S. government for display in the Smithsonian Institution Hall of Gems and Minerals in Washington. Winston, who refused several sale offers since 1949, said the gift marks a start for a premier jewel collection to rival world capitals.
FBI resolves a kindergarten enrollment mix up for 5 year old twins Margie and Michele in Bossier City Louisiana. Lt and Mrs Wolfe had struggled to tell them apart. FBI experts matched birth and present footprints in about fifteen minutes.
George Lodge, 31, son of U N Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, was named by President Eisenhower on Saturday as assistant secretary of labor for international affairs. He succeeds J Ernest Wilkins, 62, Chicago Negro, whose resignation was announced. Lodge has been labor department information director since July 1954. Wilkins was reported in line for another government post.
An earthquake of about four states rattled residents Friday night, felt from St. Louis to Paducah Kentucky and Evansville Indiana through southern Illinois. No damage was reported. The initial shock triggered vibrations for 14 minutes. Officials located the center near the tri-state area of Illinois Indiana Kentucky amid three major underground faults.
Mo hamed Ibn Faisel al Saud aged 22 nephew of King Ibn Saud of Saudi Arabia arrived in New York aboard the liner Independence with his wife Princess Mona on Saturday. He will spend a few days in the city before traveling to California to study political science at Stanford University.
George S Milroy a 30 year old salesman from Ann Arbor Michigan was arrested in Communist East Germany on October 17 fueling a diplomatic dispute over US non recognition of the East German regime. The United States demanded Milroy’s release while Moscow directed appeals to the unrecognized East German government. The East Germans notified the US consulate Milroy is being held. Milroy faces a charge of photographing military installations but denies it. He parked near a Russian installation on a transit through East Germany en route to West Berlin and sought a souvenir photo. He was detained at the Soviet commandant’s HQ in Neustrelitz as liaison officer Maj W L Van Meter of Wayne Michigan pressed for release.

BERKELEY AP The Nevada test site October blasts gave scientists a method to shape earth safely with atomic explosives. Dr Gerald Johnson of UC Livermore presented a scaled depth formula to the National Academy of Sciences, showing how depth and charge size control excavation. A 20 000 ton blast could break 4 to 5 million tons of rock, enabling harbors and dams. Cape Thompson Alaska harbor could be dug for 20 cents per cubic yard, far cheaper than conventional methods.
In a Bellevue road collision three miles southwest of Dubuque on Friday, James Vincent Davis, 63, and Joseph Menster Jr., 72, died. David Menster, 18, the driver and son of one victim, had minor injuries. Other occupants in the second car, C. H. Redman, 49, and Adrian Hogan, 40, from Clinton, were hospitalized but not seriously hurt. Services for Davis and Menster set for Monday at St. Martin's Cascade with arrangements by Devaney's Funeral Home.
Cedar Rapids man George DuCharme was among four Mississippi river duck hunters who were missing Friday and found safe Saturday morning after high winds and rough waves forced them to spend the night on an island near Lynxville Wisconsin. The party also included Raymond LaBonne and his son Dale both of Prairie du Chien and James DuCharme George’s brother.
President Eisenhower left Toledo by plane for Tacoma after a duck hunting run in Lake Erie marshland. He bagged four mallards in 98 minutes, then three more mallards and a black duck in a second morning outing. He plans to visit his brother in Tacoma, then Seattle, and may visit Augusta for golf with Thanksgiving likely in Washington or Gettysburg.
In Paris, Sorbonne math professor Paul Pisot walked out after finding a jammed amphitheater seating 378 for 1,400 students. Zoology professor Charles Devilliers also refused to open his course. Patrol logs note traffic and maintenance incidents around Mileposts 92 to 111, including a fatal collision near Milepost 111 after a patrol chase.
A wrong way driver survived a fatal head on crash on the Ohio Turnpike as seven people died. John Hines 41 of Detroit headed east in a west bound lane before a patrolman tried to stop him. Six from a James town New York family and Claudia Brooks 45 of Detroit died. The other car contained George Bentley 32 his wife and their four children aged 18 months 3 12 and 13. An oil stained toll ticket suggested Hines entered toll road at Exchange No 5 Stony Ridge.
