A newly named Midwest regional coordinator was appointed this week for next year’s peace walk that would pass through Iowa. The notice appears on Page 2A amid broader coverage of regional planning and event routes.
The line jokes that when success comes calling it will likely coincide with being in the shower, a humorous take on timing and daily routines.
John Leslie Collett and Terry Lee Fowler, both in custody, face first degree murder and first degree robbery charges in the death of Carl Wiedemeier, 72, on a rural Ladora farm. Autopsy cites heart disease precipitated by a beating. Autopsy by Dr. Thomas Bennett confirmed cause. Investigators arrested them Friday. body found Thursday near Interstate 80 south of Ladora.
Education Secretary William Bennett urged Douglas Ginsburg to withdraw from the Supreme Court nomination after a past marijuana use. Reagan reportedly allowed the message, while defending the nominee and saying compassion is warranted for youthful errors. A White House official called it a hopeless cause for Ginsburg to stay in.
A 15 year old student was wounded by shrapnel when a homemade device built from 30 caliber shell casings exploded in the Benton Community High School parking lot. Craig Ondracek, 17, was arrested for burglary and reckless use of explosives after allegedly stealing 240 cartridge casings and creating bombs. Investigators warn more devices may exist. Ondracek fights possible adult trial with a hearing set for November 17.
House Republicans unveiled a 30 billion deficit reduction plan with White House backing. It calls for at least 6 billion in tax increases and 14.4 billion in spending cuts including asset sales and user fees. Democrats saw it as a first move toward larger tax hikes and reduced military funding amid ongoing negotiations.
Iowa prison officials asked district court judges to send fewer prisoners by considering sentence alternatives, especially for property offenses. Eastern Town judges say they already follow the practice, with 6th District's Hansell and Kilburg noting no change in duty.
