The rising number of long term care needs brings 5.3 million baby boomers and many family caregivers into unpaid roles. Most are women and many juggle multiple relatives. Stress and financial strain accompany noble duties as caregivers face health risks, grief, and increasingly costly care.
Gazette notes that caregiving spans ages and roles with groups in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City offering shared experience and relief. Well Spouse founder Cathy Rammelsberg and Sister Theresa Kruml describe isolation and guilt, while schedules for four local groups are listed with contact numbers.
A Saturday workshop titled Caring Conversations on death and dying will be held November 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Iowa Hall at Kirkwood Community College. Sponsored by Kirkwood Heritage Agency on Aging and AARP, the $15 per family event covers hospice and palliative care living wills power of attorney and other end of life decisions.
