Kirkwood Tops Des Moines Area in Iowa Community College Enrollment

Kirkwood Community College now leads Iowa's 15 community colleges with fall enrollment of 11,164, up 5.3 percent and the 11th straight rise. Des Moines Area Community College reports 10,720 students. President Norm Nielsen cites demand due to strong economy and Kirkwood’s multiple off campus sites. The statewide picture shows a 1.3 percent total rise across two and four year colleges with women making up 56 percent of students.

Third of Iowa bridges in poor shape

Nearly one third of Iowa bridges are structurally deficient or inadequate to meet safety loads according to a national AP analysis of Federal Highway data as of June 30, 1996. Officials say none are in danger of collapse though many are aged and monitored, with 16 Dallas County bridges listed for attention.

Iowa City Transit launches free downtown shuttle today

Iowa City Transit debuts a free downtown shuttle to offer a transportation option for shoppers and University of Iowa students. Transit Manager Ron Logsden described the rollout, with a converted city bus shown during the homecoming parade and staff distributing schedules door to door.

City shuttle debuts with sunburst design for campus riders

The new shuttle runs Monday to Friday from 7 30 a m to 6 30 p m with 15 stops. Retiree Harry Smith says it will help in bad weather and for cane users. Officials expect up to 60 000 riders annually at about 76 500 dollars in yearly operating costs funded partly by campus system savings.
