Iowa panel urges big cuts in jobless benefits
A panel studying Iowa unemployment benefits recommends trimming payments by 61.3 to 71.8 million annually, rolling back weekly maximums from 194 to 164, and imposing 20 million in taxes on about 15 000 employers not now paying into the system. The plan also lowers the taxable wage base and ends various benefit features to save roughly 188.6 million in benefits this year.
