Former UI researcher pleads guilty to theft and fraud
Pat Palmer, 53, a former University of Iowa researcher, pleaded guilty to first degree theft and falsifying academic degrees in Johnson County District Court. Prosecutors seek probation, record expungement on completion, a suspended 90 day jail term, a $250 fine, and $19,000 restitution to the university. records tampering is dropped. The theft stemmed from falsified travel vouchers at the UI.

Iowa basketball player Pierce nears probation completion
University of Iowa freshman Pierce nears a clean record after finishing a one year probation for an assault causing injury charge. Johnson County Attorney Anne Lahey said the deferred judgment will be erased once a judge signs off next week. Pierce redshirted last season and completed community service and a sex offender program before paying remaining court costs. He is due to play in the Black and Gold Blowout with an 2002 season opener set for Nov. 23 against UNC Asheville.

Family dog dies in Cedar Rapids house fire
Cedar Rapids firefighters responded to a 1:30 p.m. blaze at 367 Seventh Ave. SW. Sasha, a 12 year old cocker spaniel, died. Sam the yellow labrador was unharmed. Owners Marlene and Joe Tamayo and 10 finches were in the home. fire started accidentally from an unattended candle.
