Linn County expands to five supervisors elected by district
Rural Linn County led a 2006 campaign to grow the board from three to five and then to district elections in 2007. The change mirrors Cedar Rapids 2005 reform, but counties retain a full-time structure and pay, with five supervisors earning about 100 862 dollars plus benefits. Machacek views district voting as rural representation, while critics note salary disputes and governance differences between county and city models.

Cedar Rapids debate over city government changes a decade on
Ten years after Cedar Rapids shifted from a commission to a council manager system the city reevaluates costs and outcomes. Figures show annual salaries for a full time city manager and staff totaling 973 918 versus 951 657 under the old plan, as supporters recall the change’s goal of saving money. The former backers say the system has been strong while critics note ongoing expenses and a need for adjustments, with federal and state figures cited by former officials and local supporters.

Cedar Rapids votes for part time mayor in 2005 charter switch
The 15 member Cedar Rapids Charter Commission opted for a part time mayor in 2005 with 68.8 percent supporting the change while 31.2 percent favored keeping the commission government. All 47 precincts backed the change and Pate later argued Cedar Rapids already had a full time mayor.
