State Climatologist Harry Hillaker reports May a 10th coldest on record and the chilliest since 1945. March to May averaged 3 degrees below normal, with El Nino unlikely to shift Iowa summers much. The five year trend remains cooler than the 1891 end, hinting at future winter warmth but persistent cool springs.
State climatologist notes unusually cool May lowering heating needs. Karen Johnson of MidAmerican Energy reports gas use 8 percent above normal in April and 24 percent in May. Spring rainfall runs 1 inch below normal while soil moisture sits near to above normal.
Rich Patterson, director of the Indian Creek Nature Tester, expanded his adjacent 67 acre land project into a retrospective dig uncovering ancient tools and signs of early human occupation. State archaeologists identify an adz likely 5 000 years old. He speculates mastodons may have roamed the area.

The 15 jurors plus three alternates in the Gerald Rieflin Jr. case attended a free 90 minute stress debriefing at the Linn County Courthouse after finding Rieflin guilty on two counts of first degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to inflict serious injury. The session, led by St Luke's hospital a critical incident team, aimed to normalize reactions and provide closure. Juror Roscoe Phipps said the debriefing was helpful and that including alternates was valuable. Judge William Thomas plans to push for expanding such sessions in future serious cases.
